Walter Shillington Today I am examining a product that allows me to quickly set up a home-style office within whatever hotel room I must spend the night. The Ugreen DigiNest Pro serves as a surge-protected power bar while providing a method of fast-charging several devices simultaneously.

Description

The DigiNest Pro weighs in at 24.4 ounces. It is composed of black and gray colored aluminum and connects to power via a heavy-duty six-foot cable. Three USB-C ports, one USB-A port, a power button, and its associated LED indicator are located on the front panel. The top of this unit features a two-prong AC outlet. Two grounded AC outlets can be accessed from the rear. The four front-mounted charging ports supply up to 100W of power, depending on the number of ports used and the power demands of the connected devices. A maximum of 1870W of power can be drawn from the three AC outlets.

GaN Technology

Gallium nitride is a crystal-like semiconductor material that boasts a broader bandgap than its silicon rival, allowing energy to pass through more efficiently. This results in higher power limits and lower operating temperatures. Walter Shillington Walter Shillington Walter Shillington Walter Shillington

Power Delivery Protocol

The Power Delivery (PD) specification denotes high power capabilities that allow USB-C PD-enabled devices to charge quickly over a USB connection. The two coupled devices negotiate a power contract, determining how much power will be pulled from the charger.

Super Charge Protocol

The charging specification of SCP (22.5W) is 5V/4.5A or 4.5V/5A, with a peak value of 22.5W. This low voltage protocol developed by Huawei is useful because less heat is generated as the connected device is charged. Walter Shillington

Accessories

My package included a good quality USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-C to Lightning cable intended for charging Apple products.

Charging Multiple Devices

The first pair of USB-C ports can output up to 100W. The third USB-C and USB-A ports will provide a maximum of 22.5W. Walter Shillington The DigiNest Pro’s power output limit is 100 watts. Because of this, the power available at each port drops as additional devices are plugged into the unit. If, for example, a MacBook Air 13 laptop were plugged into the first USB-C port, it would draw about 96 watts of power and be charged entirely within 100 minutes. This available power, however, would be reduced if a mobile phone was connected to the second USB-C port. In this case, the available power output to one port would drop to 65W, and the second port would be limited to 30W. As other devices are added, the max output at each port will be further reduced.

Compatibility

The Ugreen DigiNest may be used to charge almost any device, from a cheap electric toothbrush to an expensive laptop. Devices that take advantage of the PD or SCP fast charging protocols will significantly benefit. Walter Shillington Three AC outlets allow items such as televisions, desktops, and monitors to be connected to power.

Protective Circuitry

The three AC outlets are equipped with surge protection. Enhanced safety features protect devices connected to the USB ports from over-voltage, over-current, short-circuits, and overloads. This circuitry also contains ground protection and over-temperature control.

Overall Impression

Although it adds weight to the device, combining a charger with a power bar is an excellent idea. When plugged into an outlet in my office, the DigiNest Pro can supply the power requirements of my desktop and monitor. That leaves the two-prong AC outlet available for my desk lamp and four USB ports free to charge my phone, tablet, and Kindle. And, since my smartphone supports 65W Power Delivery, it will quickly be charged and ready to go. The Ugreen 100W DigiNest Pro is recommended.
